Bedrock Bar & Grill


Located at Pan Pacific Suites, located just beside 313 Somerset. It serves up some really good steaks, bustling warm ambience and excellent sides. My dad wanted to treat me to something good for my birthday and I suggested this place since we both love steaks.

<Oysters>

Served with red wine-shallot mignonette and lemon. I didn't really eat this as I wasn't into oysters. But my parents and my wife said it was fresh and refreshing. A pity it somehow came to my mind that my dad experience a mild diarrhoea when he got home. It might have been something else he ate, but this remains on our list of suspects. But just to clarify, my mum and wife didn't experience anything bad though.

<French Onion Soup>

Hoho! This French onion soup is certainly one for the carnivores! Not only is it cooked with the usual ingredients such as onion, beef broth and gruyere gratin. It has bacon in it too! Nothing could go wrong. It added an additional depth to the already hearty soup. But it still ranks a very close second to my favourite at Bistro Du Vin. 

<Roasted Bone Marrow>

Roasted with chopped parsley salad and served toast. This was my FIRST taste of bone marrow. I was constantly contemplating but yet excited when it finally arrived on our table. It was really fatty and gelatin-ish. But it tasted good and balance if you smear it on the toast. It was so good that I asked for more toast to go with it and they Obliged! ^^ 

<Wild Halibut>

A beauty on a plate. The delicate fish was served up along side confit of potato, fresh cherry tomato and lemon verbena vinaigrette dressing. It tasted almost like cod but without the fattiness. The fish was perfectly cooked that it flakes off smoothly.

<Steamed Asparagus>

Well, we just had to have something to cut through all this evil goodness that we are downing right? Hee ^^ But boy, it was fresh and not overcooked. Crunchy!

 <Truffle Mash Potato>

Excellent excellent excellent! Despite it looking oily. You can tell and taste that it was made from fresh potatoes and not some packet powder crap. It was velvety but yet retained some small bites in it for texture. And the truffle's aroma really came through. *Thumbs up!*

 <Duck Fat Potatoes>

How could one skip this if this is your first time? They are really crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. It had a very nice aroma from cooking in duck fat too. But given the choice if I went back again, I might just choose the mash over this.

 <Tomahawk Steak>

The highlight of the day! The Tomahawk steak! Fed with 400 days grain, this wagyu packed a punch. With it you had a full range of done-ness to sample, ranging from rare to medium well. Ordering this steak also entitles you to receive the whole range of sauces that the restaurant offers, which would have otherwise cost you $4 each. There are red wine sauce, bedrock chili oil, classic bearnaise, wholegrain whiskey mustard, chimichurri sauce. I personally prefer the mustard. Steak wise, it was really good but pricey as one would suspect. Oh! If you are adventurous enough, take the entire bone and get the tough looking bits off it. It is really crispy and tastes like beef jerky!

Tim Ho Wan



Tim Ho Wan, the much acclaimed one Michelin Star dim sum restaurant from Hong Kong made its way to Singapore a few months back. It recently opened its second outlet at Toa Payoh with 2 more to be opened by end of this year. I told myself, I'll go there with an open mind that this was another dim sum hang out rather than the standard it achieved. You know, how accurate can an Ang Moh be when he judges an Asian cuisine?

Overall, the food was good and reasonably cheap. I wouldn't say that it is absolutely fantastic but it is a dim sum place you do not want to miss. The much publicized baked bbq pork bun was good at best. I had equally good ones from the other places before. In fact I prefer the ones from Canton Paradise. I quite like the Teochew Dumpling. It was light, fragrant and had a wide variety of textures hidden in it. But the best item was definitely the steamed egg cake. One of its other famed item on the menu. This one really makes the mark. It is light, fluffy, melts in your mouth, not too sweet and full of the fragrance of brown sugar.

L'Atelier Tiramisu

Tiramisu overload!!! Thanks to my wife who bought a bucket-load of tiramisu for my birthday because I had cravings a couple of weeks back. LOL ^^ On to the goodies~~~

Classic: It was not bad. Had a decent balance between the sweet and the alcohol. The texture of the cake was just right. And the fingers weren't overly soaked.

Lychee: Smelled really good but tasted one-note. It was kinda too sweet for me and it got boring after a few bites.

Dark Cherry: My favourite out of all the flavours. It had the best balance of taste. It was sweet, had a good kick of alcohol but most importantly, it also has that slight citrus/sourness from the cherries. Every bite made me wanted to go back for more till the last.

Matcha: Totally for the green tea crazy people out there. It packs a real punch of green tea goodness at every bite. I'm not a fanatic and thus, found it quite one-note as well.

PS.Cafe

 <Key Lime Pie>

Hoho! My first ever taste of a key lime pie! Been yearning for it for quite a while and it isn't as widely available like its cousin, the lemon curd/meringue pie. The instant I opened up the box, the smell of the lime hit me so hard that it left me stunned for a couple of seconds. It tasted really sour, but in a way that I liked. The consistency of the curd was good too. But I felt that they could improve or used a different pastry to contain it. It was so crumbly that only a spoon would suffice. And I wonder, if they would serve it with some sweet Chantilly cream if I dined there. It definitely needed some balance.

<Banana Butterscotch Cake>

I guess I should have warmed it up before I ate it and with some vanilla ice-cream. But even though it was hard from the overnight refrigeration, it tasted good. The caramel on the top had a good balance of sweetness and bitterness to it. The cake was also still moist inside and had a really good banana-ish taste to it.
